Does Metabolic Syndrome Increase Your Risk for Dementia?

"In a prospective study of 2,600 elderly persons, it was shown that those with Metabolic Syndrome showed greater cognitive decline than those without Metabolic Syndrome. The cognitive decline was greater in those who had chronic levels of brain inflammation. In summary, those with components of Metabolic Syndrome (specifically hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes) in combination with chronic brain inflammation had the highest incidence of developing dementia, especially vascular dementia." (Yaffee et al, 2004)
